River Plate aims to defend its crown and push for more in 2022-23

River Plate, the last local champion, begins the new season with the aim of reigning as Argentina’s football monarch. While continental glory remains a long-term goal, the squad led by Marcelo Gallardo wants to push beyond the 2022 Professional League Cup and chase higher achievements across all competitions.

After opening with a loss in Santa Fe to Unión, the Muñeco era responded with a victory over Patronato and a win against Newell’s in Rosario. On the fourth date they drew 2-2 with Racing. A 1-0 triumph over San Lorenzo followed, then wins against Gimnasia, and a 0-1 setback in the Superclásico on date seven. In the eighth round they beat Defensa y Justicia at home 2-1 and duplicated the result in the ninth, 4-2 versus Argentinos Juniors, then 2-1 against Banfield in the tenth. On date 11, Gallardo rotated the starters and the team fell 1-0 to Talleres in Córdoba. With the return of the usual starting XI, they could not defeat Atlético Tucumán in Núñez, but Sarmiento’s 7-0 thumping sealed a quarterfinal berth for River.
