Three years without a subscription to Royal Mallorca—this sanction was announced by the club as a consequence of xenophobic insults directed at football players Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid and Samu Chukwueze of Villarreal. The club stated, in a note about season ticket holders and spectators at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, that the Ethics Committee will enforce a three-year withdrawal of a season ticket holder who engages in such behavior. The incident involved a fan who hurled xenophobic remarks at both players, highlighting the severity with which the club treats discrimination inside its venues.

The note further stressed that xenophobia has no place in sport and that Mallorca will continue its active efforts to eradicate this scourge. The decision comes about a month and a half after the troubling events surrounding Real Madrid’s match at Son Moix on 5 February, where Mallorca hosted Real Madrid. La Liga condemned the incident, noting that the intolerant chants were directed solely at a visiting player. Phrases such as “Vinicius, monkey” and other dehumanizing insults were reported, allegedly spoken by a 21-year-old season ticket holder from one of the stands. The remarks were not repeated by others in the arena and were identified as isolated misconduct.

Two days later, LaLiga announced it had filed a complaint with the Palma de Mallorca investigating courts. The individual responsible was identified by local law enforcement in Palma and belonged to units such as the UPR of the Citizens Security Brigade. Following the request of the police’s Security Coordinator, the same person again attended Villarreal’s next match and repeated the inappropriate behavior, reinforcing the seriousness of the case and the intent to pursue accountability through the proper channels.

Separately, a Palma court prepared to hear Vinicius as the victim in the case of the racial insults reported during the match. He was slated to participate via videoconference, and he would be required to appear as the complainant on the date set within the ongoing investigation into allegations of a crime against moral integrity. In parallel administrative proceedings, the State Commission Against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport proposed a monetary penalty in the form of a 4,000 euro fine as part of its recommended sanction framework. The dual pathway—criminal and administrative—reflects a coordinated effort to address offenses of this nature with clear consequences and public accountability, underscoring the commitment of clubs, leagues, and sporting authorities to uphold dignity and fair play in football.
