The Academy arrives at Quito’s summit with a squad battered by injuries and struggling to lift its mood after a tough stretch in football.

The race to climb back has turned into a decisive, intricate challenge in the Copa Libertadores. Carrying a five-match winless run (four losses) into Group A on the line, the Academy faces Aucas in Quito for the fourth date of the group stage.

The clash, scheduled for next Tuesday, May 23 at 9 p.m. local time at Chillogallo Stadium, could redefine the trajectory of the Avellaneda club. A win would keep hopes alive by potentially sealing their standing the same day, provided Flamengo defeats Ñublense on Wednesday as a visitor. A defeat would tighten the table further and leave a trip to Rio de Janeiro looming on the horizon.

IT’S CALLED RACING

Beyond the on-field struggles, Fernando Gago is dealing with a growing list of injuries. While last Friday’s suspended match versus Vélez granted some breathing room to regroup, two starting players did not travel to Ecuador: Matías Rojas continues to report ankle pain and will miss a fourth consecutive game, while Maxi Romero remains sidelined for at least another week due to the groin tear suffered against Flamengo. Gabriel Hauche also stayed behind due to a suspension tied to a red card against Mengao.

On a brighter note, Gonzalo Piovi is set to return after recovering from a knee issue sustained against Boca at the end of April, and Jonathan Gómez is back in contention as well.

Additionally, the squad includes a notable debut in the call-up: Santino Vera, a 17-year-old central midfielder who normally features for the Reserve side, adds a youthful spark to the plans.

THE RACING TRAINING

As usual, Gago offered no clear preview of the lineup for the Ecuadorian test. Given the body of the squad, the formation could lean toward a five-man backline, with a midfield trio beavering behind two forwards, aiming for balance and cover.

The probable XI could be Gabriel Arias in goal; Facundo Mura, Leonardo Sigali, Jonatan Galván, Gonzalo Piovi, and Gabriel Rojas across the back; Juan Nardoni, Aníbal Romero, and Jonathan Gómez in midfield; with Nicolás Saliadarre and either Paolo Guerrero or Nicolás Reniero up front.

ALTERNATIVE

To be determined.
