The Academy visits Tomba to get closer to the narrative above, and Gago will face the necessity of a forced alteration while also weighing a tactical adjustment.

After a cautious start, Racing found its rhythm again, posting back-to-back wins in the Professional League. The second victory came against Lanús, the only side to reach the fifth round with a perfect record. Riding high on momentum, the Club de Avellaneda aims to close the gap at the top of the table and push toward destiny.

Racing’s full agenda for 2023

On the sixth matchday, the Avellaneda club travels to Mendoza to face the erratic Godoy Cruz at an unusual kickoff of 5 p.m. on Monday, March 6.

IT’S CALLED RACING

The joy of the latest win over Garnet could not completely mask the blow suffered by Fernando Gago as two key pieces were sidelined. Anibal Moreno and Matias Rojas finished the game with the team, but both left the field to be assessed over the following days, leaving the coach in suspense through the week.

The Argentinian midfielder from Catamarca endured a heavy shin impact that forced him off late in the match and kept him on the sidelines until Saturday, when he rejoined the group. He then traveled with the squad, and his participation was confirmed for the upcoming fixture.

The Paraguayan, by contrast, did not make the trip. After a strong first half against Lanús, he was taken off at halftime and later diagnosed with a new muscle issue, a contracture. After a string of injuries, the midfielder stayed away from training and from teammates all week. Despite talk of him potentially making the bench, he did not travel to Mendoza at all.

Also missing from the squad was Edwin Cardona. The Colombian did not suffer an injury but failed to meet the weekly weight parameters set by the coach, so he was not considered for selection.

THE RACING TRAINING

Beyond the strong showing against Lanús, especially in the first half, Gago had prepared several adjustments for the Mendoza trip. The former midfielder is known for shoring up formations as needed, rarely sticking to a fixed setup for long, and he regularly tweaks schedules and personnel.

Yet the confirmed lineup from Malvinas Argentinas brought only one mandatory alteration: Nicolás Oroz earned the starting spot on the wing, pushing Hauche to the bench. Maxi Moralez remains available, with the coach intent on building trust in Jonathan Gómez as an interior midfielder.

The Academy lined up with Gabriel Arias; Facundo Mura, Leonardo Sigali, Gonzalo Piovi, Gabriel Rojas; Juan Nardoni, Anibal Moreno, Jonathan Gomez; Johan Carbonero, Maximiliano Romero, Nicolas Oroz.

ALTERNATIVE

Tagliamonte, Insúa, Galván, Opazo, Pillud, Moralez, Avilés, Hauche, Reniero, Fértoli and Paolo Guerrero.
