Media outlets report that Motorika’s head of prosthetics, Oleg Pikalov, spoke with figure skater Roman Kostomarov, who endured the loss of a shinbone and fingers in one arm, about how a prosthesis is selected and fitted. His remarks were noted by the portal kp.ru.

Before a prosthesis is fitted, swelling must subside and sutures removed from the surgical site. To maximize benefit, it may be necessary to adjust the prosthesis or modify its components after an initial fitting, according to Pikalov.

The doctor stressed that the rehabilitation period depends on the patient’s overall health and the complexity of tasks the prosthesis is expected to support.

He added that an individualized rehabilitation plan is essential and should involve a multidisciplinary team: rehabilitation specialists, occupational therapists, orthopedists, and psychologists. Motivation plays a significant role. For some patients, a few months may suffice for the prosthesis to become a daily assistive tool, while others may require more than a year.

Earlier, the prosthetist answered questions about Kostomarov’s possible return to ice.
