The head coach of the Russian national team, Yuri Borodavko, responded to remarks from Norwegian analyst Petter Soleng Skinstad about Alexander Bolshunov’s expected wins at the 2024 Strongest Spartakiad. Borodavko’s reaction emphasized focus over speculation, noting that opinions from journalists or experts should not drive responses. He cited Dima Guberniev as having handled such chatter in his own straightforward manner.
<p Skinstad had asserted that Bolshunov’s triumph at the Spartakiad was prearranged. The season that followed saw Bolshunov clinching victories in the 50 km classic marathon, the classic sprint, the skiathlon, the time trial, and the freestyle team sprint, underscoring his versatility and endurance across varied formats.
Bolshunov has collected multiple accolades, including two World Cup titles and a Tour de Ski victory. At the Beijing Olympic Games, he earned five medals, among them three golds, illustrating a remarkable level of performance on the Olympic stage.
Like many Russian skiers, Bolshunov faced a suspension from the final World Cup events of that period, leading to an early finish to the 2021/22 season and leaving him second in the overall World Cup standings for that year.
Earlier, Bolshunov explained his marathon success by isolating himself from dangerous areas, a strategic approach that reflected his attention to safety and trajectory during demanding long-distance races.
