Alexander Ovechkin, the Russian forward and captain of the Washington Capitals, scored twice as his team faced the Winnipeg Jets in an NHL regular-season game.
Initially, Ovechkin’s first goal was credited to teammate Connor McMichael because the two players fired at the net in quick succession. Ultimately, the mark was officially attributed to Ovechkin.
The Russian star found the back of the net in the 44th and 53rd minutes, boosting Washington to a 3-0 lead as the game continued.
Ovechkin had tallied 26 goals in 67 regular-season appearances this season, adding 32 assists to his stat line.
On March 23, Ovechkin added a goal and an assist in a regular-season matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Ovechkin remains in the conversation about the top scorers in league history. Wayne Gretzky, a Canadian icon, holds the all-time NHL goal record with 894. Ovechkin sits in second place with 848 goals, trailing Gretzky by 46, as he continues his pursuit in the ongoing season.
There has been chatter in the United States about whether Ovechkin’s peak years have passed, but he continues to contribute at a high level and remains a central figure for the Capitals.
