Olympic ice dancer Kostomarov shows signs of improvement amid serious hospitalization

Olympic silver medalist in ice dancing and renowned choreographer Ilya Averbukh provided an update on Roman Kostomarov, noting that the skater’s health is slowly improving. He said there is now a slight uplift in Kostomarov’s condition, and that supporters from around the world continue to hope for a full recovery. Averbukh added that on this important day, he and many others are holding their fists in solidarity and praying for Roma’s restoration. He also took a moment to honor Oksana Domnina and Kostomarov’s mother, recognizing the strength they have shown while facing great challenges. The remarks were shared on Match TV.

Earlier in January, news emerged that Kostomarov had been admitted to a hospital with severe pneumonia and required artificial lung support, placing his condition in a critical category. He was later transferred to a facility in Kommunarka where doctors performed resuscitation and connected him to ECMO. Reports indicated that Kostomarov had lost sight in his right eye and suffered two strokes during this difficult period.

In partnership with Tatyana Navka, Kostomarov established himself as a world and European champion in ice dancing, securing multiple world titles, European crowns, and Grand Prix victories. His career on the ice was complemented by his popularity off the rink, where he frequently appeared on television, including a widely watched season of the show Ice Age.

Navka, herself a former Olympic champion in ice dancing, also commented on recent events by noting the intention of esteemed coach of the USSR figure skating, Tatyana Tarasova, to launch a new show on a major video platform. The conversation underscored the close bonds within the skating community and the ongoing efforts to support Kostomarov through his recovery.
