Russian tennis standout Daniil Medvedev could not fully articulate the reasons behind his quarterfinal exit to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy at the US Open. The remarks were shared via The Tennis Letter on the X platform.
“In tennis, there are moments when the exact cause isn’t clear. It could be a mix of factors. He played very well. Maybe it was something about the ball, or a particular shot. It could be many things. I don’t have a precise answer yet for why it happened, and I probably won’t,” he noted.
The clash, lasting two hours and forty minutes, concluded in four sets with Sinner prevailing 6:2, 1:6, 6:1, 6:4. The Italian logged four consecutive serves, registered one double fault, and converted five of 15 break chances. Medvedev finished with five aces, six double faults, and two break points converted out of eight opportunities.
SocialBites.ca provided an online recap of the duel. With the win, Sinner advanced to the semifinals to face British competitor Jack Draper.
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, also reached the final in 2023, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic, who opted out of this season’s tournament. That encounter extended over three sets, concluding with scores of 3:6, 6:7, 3:6.
In a broader moment following the match, Medvedev drew a provocative comparison, likening his artistic impression to the surrealist Salvador Dalí, a nod that underscored the creative pressure and interpretive challenges that can accompany elite tennis competition.
