Real Madrid confirmed on a Saturday that Marco Asensio would leave the club when his contract ends. The Balearic midfielder received another offer but opted to pursue a fresh challenge with a different side and a leading role in the project ahead.

In an official Real Madrid note, the Chamartín club expressed gratitude for Asensio’s seven seasons defending the shield and the jersey. He joined the club at twenty and carved his name into the club’s history under the presidency of Florentino Pérez.

Madridistas will remember his career and conduct. Real Madrid will always be his home, and the club sent best wishes to him and his family as he begins this new stage, a note released just before a pregame briefing ahead of the clash against Athletic at the Santiago Bernabéu. 18:30 kickoff time.

Called up by the national team for Spain on Friday, Asensio shared a video on his social networks announcing his decision. “I’ve had the privilege to live my dreams. Seeking a project to achieve new goals, I have decided to take a new direction in my career,” the Balearic midfielder said.

Many parties, few titles

Real Madrid wished for his continued involvement, a point echoed by Carlo Ancelotti. Yet the rise of Rodrygo and Fede Valverde as capable right wingers left Asensio in a secondary role. This season he played 50 matches, the second-highest total among Madridistas, with 18 starts. It marked a dip from his peak outside the 2019/20 season when injuries limited his playing time.

Ahead of the match against Athletic at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, Asensio departed after 285 appearances in a white shirt, scoring 61 goals and providing 32 assists. Notably, he was never sent off during his Madrid tenure, logging more than 14,000 minutes on the field.

PSG, most likely target

With free-agent status in recent months and a July 1 date eyed for a new chapter, Asensio has drawn interest from several European clubs. Barcelona has shown interest, but Paris Saint-Germain has been the team with the strongest momentum to sign him, following the departures of Messi and Sergio Ramos, with Unai Emery at the helm at Aston Villa as another possible destination.

Two paths lie ahead: one across the Atlantic aboard a great liner, another on the big stage of world football. For now, PSG appears to hold the edge in pursuing Asensio, especially after the exits of Messi and possibly Neymar, shaping a new era for the French club.

3 Champions Leagues

3 La Ligas

1 King’s Cup

4 Club World Cups

3 European Super Cups

3 Spanish Super Cups
