The chairman of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, spoke about the club’s current situation on Cadena Ser, addressing the departure of Lionel Messi and the lingering idea of a possible return for the Argentine star many fans still dream of seeing in Barcelona.

During the program Qué T’hi Jugues, broadcast by SER Catalunya, Laporta acknowledged that Messi could not be kept as Barça faced dire circumstances and that his exit was the best option for the club at the time. The Barça leader stated that he had to place the interests of Barcelona above the best player in football history, while noting that Messi would always be part of the club’s shield and expressing a wish for a different ending for him. He added that there were several possibilities, but it would be wrong to disclose them prematurely, as the relationship between the club and the player was a shared bond.

Laporta preferred not to elaborate further, recalling that he faced intense criticism from many directions. He denied reports suggesting that his relationship with Messi had deteriorated from the moment the Argentine left FC Barcelona.

Regarding the club’s future, Laporta emphasized a commitment to keeping Barcelona’s ownership model and rejected any move toward turning the club into a limited company. He asserted with confidence that the real estate model would remain intact and untouchable.

Looking ahead, he discussed the possibility of a new global competition that could become a reality by 2025, presenting Barça as a potential challenger to established leagues. He stressed that the project would not have been pursued if it did not involve open competition and shared a belief in the benefits of such a framework.

On transfers, Laporta made it clear that Barcelona would not pay a large sum for certain players and dismissed rumors of a strained relationship with the president of the LFP. He did acknowledge there has been tension with Javier Thebes in the past, but also highlighted a strong rapport with former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué, suggesting that if Piqué ever pursues leadership, his track record might support such a move in the future.

Overall, the chairman framed Barcelona as a club guided by its core principles and a careful balance between tradition and ambition, aiming to grow while preserving its unique ownership model and identity.
