Ferencváros Coach Stresses Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Message to Players
Ferencváros head coach Stanislav Cherchesov spoke about the message delivered to his team by Khabib Nurmagomedov, the former UFC lightweight champion whose influence reached the Hungarian club. The renowned Russian tactician noted that several players admitted they are fans of the mixed martial arts icon. “Then I pulled up a video message from Khabib and told them, apologies, your fans are a bit overwhelmed here”, Cherchesov recounted. He described showing the clip to the squad as a way to reinforce focus and unity before competition. The exchange, first shared with Match TV, underscored the cultural impact Nurmagomedov still has on athletes across sports.
Cherchesov added that the players expressed their thanks for the message and the moment of motivation lingered well beyond the locker room. The coach observed that the support from Nurmagomedov’s fans helped to amplify the energy inside the team during a pivotal period of the season.
In May, Ferencváros, under Cherchesov’s leadership, clinched the Hungarian championship ahead of schedule. This marked the second major trophy in a row for the 59-year-old strategist, highlighting his ability to guide the club to consistent success and reinforce a winning culture among players in a demanding league.
Khabib Nurmagomedov had a storied career in MMA, finishing with an undefeated record over 29 bouts. His last victory came against American contender Justin Gaethje in the autumn of 2020, a triumph that highlighted his dominance inside the cage. Shortly after that win, Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from professional competition, citing a vow he had made to his mother following the death of his father in July 2020. Since hanging up his gloves, he established Eagle FC, a promotion aimed at continuing his influence within combat sports and mentoring younger fighters.
Earlier remarks from Cherchesov hinted at potential Russian players who could strengthen Ferencváros, pointing to a broader conversation about talent mobility and the club’s ongoing strategy to enhance competitiveness at national and regional levels. Many observers viewed Nurmagomedov’s mentorship as a symbol of mental fortitude and discipline that could inspire Ferencváros to sustain high performance in future campaigns.
