Dutch driver Max Verstappen of Red Bull dominated the Italian Grand Prix this Sunday, sealing a commanding win. Spaniard Carlos Sainz, starting from the back after a power unit change, climbed to finish fourth, tightening his chase for the title in the sixteenth round of the Formula One World Championship. Fernando Alonso, celebrating his 350th F1 race, faced a mechanical setback and retired from the race.
A safety car slowed the action with a few laps remaining following an incident involving Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren. Verstappen, who had started seventh after a separate penalty, continued to press ahead, underscoring that pace alone could not always dictate strategy. The outcome kept Verstappen on track for another championship, as his formidable pace kept him in front when it mattered most.
With a fifth consecutive victory, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari now leads the standings by 116 points with six races remaining. He finished second after losing the pole position earlier in the weekend. The podium was completed by George Russell of Mercedes.
sainz, for his part, made an impressive recovery from the back of the grid after replacing his power unit. He advanced through the field to secure fourth place and briefly eyed a challenge on Russell before the safety car disrupted those ambitions.
Alonso, who started sixth due to prior penalties, encountered energy issues in the early stages and ultimately retired on lap 32 because of hydraulic pressure problems in his Alpine. His retirement marked the end of a streak of ten consecutive finishes this season and coincided with him equaling Finnish veteran Kimi Raikkonen as the driver with the most starts in the sport, reaching 350 races.
As the grid underwent a dramatic reshuffle, with many drivers penalized for changes to their cars, Leclerc maintained the championship lead while Lando Norris of McLaren slipped to sixth.
