After debuting in Torrevieja as one of the venues for the 2021 World Cup, Guerreras will set up in the town as the lead-up to a major continental stage in Europe. The event will unfold in Alicante from October 28 to 30, featuring the 25th International Spanish Tournament where the Spain women’s handball team will challenge Tunisia, Egypt, and Switzerland. Before Europe’s spotlight, the tournament had been staged in Slovenia, North Macedonia, and Montenegro.

Presented at the plenary hall of Torrevieja City Council with attendance from the president of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation, Francisco Blázquez; the mayor, Eduardo Dolon; and former international player and sports consultant Diana Box, the event highlighted Torrevieja as a strong home base for the team and its supporters.

Blázquez spoke about the choice to return to Torrevieja, noting a sense of home after the World Cup. He described the moment as a gift back to the city and its residents for the support shown during the World Cup, which was praised for its health management and overall success on the international stage.

He added that the joint efforts of the city council and the regional authorities were essential to the World Cup’s success. Torrevieja earned a reputation as a talisman for the national team and became a focal point for Spanish handball. The upcoming European Championship was seen as a natural continuation of that momentum, with sights set on the 2024 Paris Olympics as the next milestone.

The first mayor expressed enthusiasm about the Warriors’ return to Torrevieja. The idea was not merely to host a tournament but to host a concentrated period for Europe, showcasing the team in a city that has shown unwavering pride and support.

Officials emphasized the city’s ongoing commitment to the Guerreras, with a belief that the affection extended to the team would be returned in full. Torrevieja, described as a fortress for the Guerreras, would once again serve as the headquarters before a continental event of significant importance. The local leadership underlined that the city would continue backing the team as it gears up for major competitions on the world stage.
