Girona, the Spanish club, will not participate in the UEFA Champions League next season. This conclusion has been shared by Curiosidades Europa on its social channels.
The situation stems from ownership. Girona is part of the City Football Group, the same umbrella that owns Manchester City, a current participant in the Champions League. UEFA rules prevent teams with the same owner from competing in the same tournament. City Football Group spans twelve clubs worldwide, with in Europe Girona and Manchester City representing the group, alongside Lommel in Belgium, Palermo in Italy, and Troyes in France.
After eighteen rounds in La Liga, Girona sits atop the table with 45 points, with Real Madrid three points behind and still to play one more match. On December 21, Girona and Betis settled for a 1-1 draw in a match that kept Girona ahead in the standings.
In spring 2022, the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) made the decision to suspend the participation of Russia and all Russian clubs in all competitions overseen by these bodies.
Previously, questions were raised about whether Russian clubs could compete in the Super League. (Source: Curiosidades Europa)
