Fetisov Criticizes IOC Policy Toward Russia and Its Leadership

State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov, celebrated twice as an Olympic hockey champion, expressed a sharp critique of the International Olympic Committee for its stance on Russia. He conveyed his view through TASS, arguing that the IOC no longer serves as a unifying force for athletes drawn into politically tense eras. Fetisov recalled a time when global sports events like the World Championships and the Olympic Games acted as bridges, bringing nations together and fueling athletes with hope for a better future. In his telling, the core values of sport—honor for the flag and respect among competing nations—outweighed any national complexities, a sentiment he feels has been eroded by current IOC leadership. He singled out Thomas Bach, the IOC president, as emblematic of decisions that violate long-standing principles. Fetisov remarked that he did not expect a different outcome from Bach, underscoring a sense of disillusionment with the federation’s policy direction.
