The Netherlands is engaging in discussions with the United Arab Emirates about the possible extradition of Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes. TV channels have reported on this topic, but there is no official confirmation from the Dutch prosecutor that a formal request has been sent to the UAE. According to RTL News, the Amsterdam public prosecutor’s office has acknowledged that Promes was detained in Dubai in connection with a local offense.
On February 14, an Amsterdam court handed Promes a six year prison sentence for cocaine trafficking. The hearing occurred on January 24, with prosecutors seeking a nine year term. A formal international alert was issued on February 16.
On February 22, RBC reported that Promes expressed willingness to testify in person in the Amsterdam court if he would not be arrested at that time.
Promes faced police intervention at the airport on February 29 while attempting to depart from Dubai to Russia with his team, aiming to participate in a match in Saint Petersburg for Zenit. He was not able to fly to Saint Petersburg.
On March 1, journalist Ivan Karpov indicated that Promes remained in the UAE under detention for leaving the scene of an accident.
The question remains what conditions would allow Promes to travel to Russia, and what the next steps in the extradition process might look like for all parties involved.
