Earlier, the Russian Football Federation announced a friendly match in Tehran scheduled for March 23 between the national teams of Iran and Russia. Reports also indicate a March 27 friendly against Iraq at Fisht Stadium in Sochi.

Historically, in the spring of 2022, both FIFA and UEFA decided to suspend Russia from participation in competitions under their control, affecting the national team and all Russian clubs. Former Russian international Andrey Kanchelskis has criticized the performance of the national team under then head coach Stanislav Cherchesov, who led the team through a difficult period after a disappointing showing at the 2020 European Championship held in 2021. Cherchesov later took a coaching role with Ferencváros in Hungary as part of his coaching career.
