The 2024 European Championship draw began to shape the destiny of the Spanish national team as they entered a group that many describe as especially challenging. Euro 2024 will proceed even without an international break, and though the ball had not yet rolled, the fate of the participating teams was already taking form before the tournament kicks off in Germany next June.
It was a significant day for Spain, especially since on Saturday, December 2, they learned their EuroCup opponents for the group stage in Germany. With Italy and Croatia as the tough rivals in Group B, De la Fuente’s squad left the draw room with more concerns than anticipated.
As the qualifying rounds wrapped up across Europe (the playoffs still to come), some of the world’s strongest teams found themselves distributed into various pots, heightening the anticipation ahead of the premier continental event.
In GOAL we cover everything you need to know about the Euro 2024 draw, including how to watch it, the teams involved, and more.
When did the Euro 2024 draw take place?
The complete Euro 2024 draw occurred on Saturday, December 2, 2023. The ceremony was staged at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, one of the tournament’s ten host cities, where five matches will be held, including four group-stage fixtures and one quarter-final.

How does the competition operate?
Germany automatically qualified as hosts, while 20 other slots were allocated to teams that emerged as group winners or runners-up in the ten groups. The final three places for Euro 2024 were decided through playoff routes based on performance in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League, with play-offs in March to whittle twelve teams down to three finalists for inclusion in the tournament.
The teams were placed into four pots (1, 2, 3, 4) prior to the draw, according to their qualifying results. The host nation Germany was placed in pot one and was automatically assigned to Group A rather than being drawn via the pot procedure.
