Inside the league, the line between direct promotion and mid-table finish is often narrow. A small margins decision can swing a season, and a team may end the regular schedule with identical points to rivals, with the tie-breaker coming down to goal difference or head-to-head metrics.

Over recent months Elche has shown notable progress, especially in results. Coach Sebastián Beccacece’s squad put together a streak of six games without defeat, including a 2-0 win over Espanyol last weekend, collecting 14 points from a possible 18.

Green Franjiverdes face another heavyweight in the promotion battle, a squad that can swing momentum in a crowded race.

Elche has faced challenges in surging past direct rivals. The club has managed to beat only one of the six teams currently in the top six, with two earning direct promotion and four winning their spots through the playoffs. Notably, leader Leganés defeated Elche at Martínez Valero by 1-0.

Elche won four of the remaining matches against all but the other five teams and only managed a draw in one contest.

Before that, Sporting Gijón, occupying second place, beat Elche at Molinón-Enrique with a 2-0 score, a poor showing for Elche in one of the season’s tougher matches.

The only positive note came in a draw against Valladolid, who were classified third, offering Elche a reliable point away from home in Nuevo José Zorrilla.

During a visit last Saturday Espanyol also left without points from the clash.

The match left Espanyol fifth in the standings. Eibar and Franjiverde failed to secure a positive result, losing 2-1 at Ipurúa.

Earlier Ferrol Racing Elche, who had climbed to sixth due to recent promotion, suffered a heavy loss on opening day and fell to relegation pressure at Martínez Valero, 0-1.

While optimism remains, Beccacece’s squad must win four times in the second round against Sporting, Valladolid, Eibar and Espanyol to reverse the early-season missteps. The Franjiverdes have shown resilience at home in recent bets, aiming to improve their first-round form and raise their goal tally.

Leganés and Racing will also face Ferrol away from home.

However, struggles aren’t limited to the top seven. Among teams ranked seventh to fourteenth, Elche sits tenth and has not enjoyed strong results. The earlier clashes included a goalless draw with Racing de Santander at Ciutat de València, a single point earned for eighth place, and a home 1-1 draw with Santander. A heavy 4-0 defeat at Burgos followed, and Elche still has yet to play Oviedo, currently in eleventh.

One notable win for Elche was a 2-1 success against Tenerife, who sat ninth, and a 2-0 victory over Real Zaragoza in twelfth place. Both results came in the last two home fixtures at Martínez Valero, giving Elche a slight edge on the season’s goal average for the moment.

Last weekend’s defeat against Espanyol underscored the need for solid defense and efficient attack. Beccacece acknowledged that stronger defensive organization and sharper finishing were necessary, particularly when opportunities arose on the counter and during the buildup through the wings.

He pointed to the need to pressure the left flank more effectively and to maintain tighter lines when the ball is switched across the pitch. He emphasized ongoing adjustments to reduce errors when defending in the final third, especially on the counter and in decisive plays near the goal.

Beccacece: “We needed to defend better in goals and be more effective in attack”

Midfielder Aleix Febas, a regular starter for the Green-French side, reflected on the defeat by Espanyol. He said the team started strongly but was punished on the counter and conceded the first goal. The second goal compounded the difficulties, making the match harder to salvage.

Febas added that the side must keep growing and sharpen their presence in the final meters. More precise crossing and tighter defense are essential as they push for improvements down the stretch.

Despite the tough spell, the Catalan player remained hopeful. He stated that the league is long and the team must keep fighting on the road to promotion. A succinct list of results shows a mix of wins and draws that keep Elche in the hunt for a postseason push.

Across the standings, several teams have posted results that alter the promotion landscape. A 1-0 win for Leganés, a 2-0 win for Sporting, a 1-1 draw with Valladolid, a 2-1 win at Eibar, and a 2-0 win for Espanyol illustrate the volatility of the table. Other recent outcomes include Ferrol a 1-0 victim, a 0-0 draw with Raising, and a 1-1 result with Santander. Burgos also registered a 4-0 victory, reshaping the late-season dynamics.
