Edu Albacar named coach of Athletic Torrellano Elche
Athletic Torrellano Elche announced on Sunday the appointment of a new head coach following the dismissal of Carlos de las Cuevas, whose leadership saw the team drop into the relegation zone due to a string of weak results. The choice to steady the ship is Edu Albacar, a former Elche player who now works on the technical staff of Costa City, the club owned by the Ñíguez family.
Edu Albacar, a coach by chance
Edu Albacar wore Elche colors from 2010 to 2018 and played a crucial role in the era that earned the club promotion to the First Division in the 2012/13 campaign. His left foot became a defining feature, helping him become the record scorer among Elche’s defenders. He later contributed to the club’s structure by working with the technical secretariat during the 2015/16 interim period.

Climbing into the role as Bordalás’ assistant
After ending his playing career, Albacar pursued coaching in Tarragona and led several youth projects before returning to the coaching world. He acted as an assistant to José Bordalás at Valencia, and his most recent role before joining Athletic Torrellano was in charge of the youth teams at Costa City.
The former left back, who also spent time with Hércules, Alicante and Novelda, faces the tough task of lifting Isabel Fernández’s squad out of the lower tier of Tercera RFEF Group 6. Torrellano sits near the bottom after a home loss to Gandía, with 12 points and a small gap to safety.
