The 2023 Club World Cup decisions and what it means for teams wearing the world champion emblem

The Club World Cup is the stage where the reigning world champions from each continent gather to crown the club that will wear the badge of global champions for the next several months. In 2023, clubs from around the world traveled to Morocco in February to compete for that honor and to determine the world champion of football clubs for the season.

Club World Cup 2023: when and where it takes place, teams involved, format, schedule, and matchups

The global club championship is scheduled from February 1 to February 11, 2023, with multiple Moroccan venues hosting the matches. The exact cities and venues were announced by football’s governing body during a December council meeting in Qatar, which outlined the tournament dates and host country.

Which teams take part in the 2023 Club World Cup

The field consists of the most recent continental champions, each earning a spot based on their continent’s top club competition. For this edition, the participants are listed below.

  • Real Madrid (UEFA Champions League winner)
  • Flamengo (CONMEBOL Libertadores Champion)
  • Seattle Sounders (CONCACAF Champions League Champion)
  • Al-Hilal (AFC Champions League Champion)
  • Wydad Casablanca (CAF Champions League Champion)
  • Auckland City (OFC Champions League Champion)
  • Al-Ahly (CAF Champions League Runner-Up)

*Because the 2022 AFC tournament had not concluded by the selection date, the Asian slot was allocated to the 2021-2022 Asian champion Al-Hilal to represent Asia in the 2023 Club World Cup.

*Rules prevent two teams from the same country, and since Wydad Casablanca is Moroccan and the African champion, FIFA decided that Al-Ahly would fill the remaining African slot. Al-Ahly serves as the runner-up from Africa, allowing the continent to be represented.
