A medical source described ongoing interventions and the delicate state of his health, noting that edema has extended to the head and that doctors are cautious about removing the patient from medically induced sleep. Medical professionals describe the prognosis as uncertain, with a roughly even chance of improvement versus complications. If the immune system fails to mount a sufficient response, the available therapies may not achieve a positive outcome. When blood was purified in attempts to stimulate systemic recovery, clinicians hoped for a favorable immune reaction that would translate into a tangible trend toward improvement.
Kostomarov was previously kept under drug-induced sleep during his treatment with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life-support measure used in severe cardiopulmonary failure. Reports from February 7 indicated that both legs had to be amputated as part of the ongoing crisis, underscoring the severity of the medical condition and the risks involved in his care.
His hospitalization was made public on January 10, when it was announced that he had been admitted to intensive care due to pneumonia and was receiving artificial lung ventilation. The situation was described as extremely serious at that time, prompting the relocation of the patient to a specialized facility for continued life support and monitoring. At the same period, medical updates indicated that Kostomarov had been resuscitated and connected to ECMO, and it was reported that his right eye had lost vision.
In assessments shared with the public, a former immunologist pointed to a very low probability of survival given the complexity of the condition. The medical team has pursued multiple avenues to stabilize Kostomarov, adjust therapies, and support his immune response while managing the risks associated with prolonged critical illness. Throughout this period, the focus remained on maintaining life functions, preventing further organ damage, and monitoring for potential signs of improvement as the treatment team weighs next steps in the patient’s care.
