The World Cup Qualifiers and Chile Women’s National Team Schedule

Chile’s women’s national team aimed for a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, with plans to compete from February 17 to 23, 2023. These dates marked a pivotal phase in their campaign as they chased one of the playoff places for the global event.

The squad prepared for the Copa America Colombia 2022, a tournament staged from July 8 to 30 across Armenia, Cali, and Bucaramanga. Led by coach José Letelier, the team refined its strategy and built toward the decisive matches that would shape their World Cup fate.

During the lead-up to the ninth edition of the tournament, Chile faced a challenging pair of friendlies against Venezuela. The Creole side opened with a loss at La Granja Stadium on June 25, and then succumbed 1-3 in Rancagua three days later, signaling the uphill climb ahead.

The squad then moved to coffee-producing nations to prepare for the competition. Chile was drawn into Group A alongside the host nation Colombia, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Ecuador, while Group B included Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The layout set up a demanding schedule of group stage clashes and potential crossovers for knockout qualification.

The opening day brought a setback as Chile’s national team debuted on July 11 against Paraguay, losing 3-2 at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium. The team rebounded by defeating Ecuador in the same round, followed by a commanding 5-0 win over Bolivia. A subsequent match against another coffee nation left them with renewed urgency as they faced a tough test against Colombia, ultimately losing 4-0.

Nevertheless, after advancing past Venezuela in the ninth-placed crossover, Chile earned a place in the playoff bracket targeting the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The February window became crucial, with Chile seeking one of three spots available through the playoffs to reach the global tournament, which was slated to run between July and August of the following year. A victory either against Senegal or Haiti would ensure a place in Group B of the World Cup, a pathway that would place the team alongside some of the world’s best in a highly competitive field.

Among the playoff format details, ten players were selected, distributed into three groups; two groups contained three teams and the remaining one housed four. The winners of each zone would advance to the world stage, underscoring the high stakes of the February clashes.

Earlier in October, the Creole side played two matches in Mexico against local powerhouses and Club América. The first game kicked off on Thursday, October 6, at the Centenario venue in Coapa, followed by a second match on Monday, October 10, against the host team, at the same venue. Chile, ranked 36th in the FIFA standings, stood three places behind their opponent at the time, yet neither game yielded a qualifying result toward the World Cup.

In late 2022, Chile also faced the Philippines in friendlies, securing a 1-1 draw in Sausalito and then a 1-0 win at La Pintana Municipal Stadium, helping finish the year on a positive note despite a disappointing result in a subsequent match against the Basque Country side in Vitoria.

The motto for the squad has been resilience through tough matches. The message from the team—captured in social posts and fan encouragement—emphasized that suffering in the moment can lead to lasting joy as they push toward the World Cup dream. The campaign from February 17 to 23, 2023, was framed as another significant step in their quest for a World Cup berth in Australia and New Zealand.

Early pride and determination were echoed in posts celebrating their journey, underscoring a collective resolve to keep making history as they chase qualification slots for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. At times, the tone conveyed a sense of unity and forward momentum that fans welcomed with enthusiasm.

CHILE UNDER 17

The Under-17 Women’s Red prepared for the 2022 edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, which began on October 11. The draw, held at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, placed them in Group B alongside Germany, Nigeria, and New Zealand, with Álex Castro guiding the squad.

In the tournament, Chile opened strongly with a 3-1 victory over their opponents, thanks to goals from Ámbar Figueroa, Tali Rovner, and Anaís Cifuentes. They finished the group stage with a difficult final match against the Golden Eagles in Bhubaneswar, where a 0-6 defeat to Germany complicated their advancing hopes. A later 2-1 defeat concluded their World Cup journey.
