The Dakar community mourns the loss of Carles Falcón
Carles Falcón could not overcome the grave injuries from a severe crash during the second stage of the season. The Dakar rally and the Twin Trail team announced his passing on Monday. The 45-year-old Catalan rider suffered a crash at the 448th kilometer of the second special stage, was resuscitated on site, transported to a Riyadh hospital, and spent several days in an intensive care unit in a coma before measures could be taken for his return to Spain. At the time, his condition remained critical.
Cerebral edema forced Saudi doctors to postpone emergency surgery on the C2 vertebra. In addition to the head injury, fractures were confirmed in five ribs, the clavicle, and the left wrist. After returning to Spain, medical teams concluded that nothing more could be done to save his life. The team’s statement clarified that the neurological damage caused by cardio-respiratory arrest during the accident was irreversible.
The team’s statement outlined these key points:
“On Monday, January 15, Carles left us. The medical team confirmed that the neurological damage caused by cardio-respiratory arrest at the time of the accident was irreversible.”
