The Ambassadors are edging closer to sealing a place in the semifinals and keeping their title bid alive in Group B.

They produced a pair of big hits in the BetPlay League 2023 semifinals and the campaign moves forward with three fixtures still on the calendar, setting up a dramatic finale for the first title of the year.

Group B has earned the nickname the “group of death” because it brings together three heavyweights along with a fourth challenger, Magnates, creating a tense run of matches where each result carries weight. The favorites have often dictated terms, and that pressure could determine who advances and who falls short as the phase unfolds.

After three rounds, Millonarios sit top on seven points, followed by América and Boyacá Chicó, with the Powerful on one point. If the trend persists, the finalists might be decided even before the final round.

How many points does Millonarios need to reach the final?

Following the third matchday, when the Ambassadors handed a heavy defeat to América in Cali, the group could reach a conclusion on the fourth matchday, scheduled to take place in Bogotá and Medellín on the upcoming Saturday. The fixtures are set to stir up a blend of outcomes that would challenge any simple prediction.

Should Millonarios defeat América at El Campín and Medellín triumph over Boyacá Chicó at Atanasio Girardot, the leaders coached by Alberto Gamero would be guaranteed a spot in the final stage of the championship. With the “invisible point” advantage, they would effectively seal the top seed and push the remaining positions into a tight scramble, making advancement almost inevitable in the opening finish of the tie break.

Otherwise, supporters will have to wait for the day’s results to assess options on the fifth matchday, where the action takes place at a neutral venue while the Powerful and another contender meet in Antioquia to settle matters on home turf.

GROUP B STANDING

HOW IS THE TIEBREAKER?

Official competition rules outline how ties are resolved at this stage. If two clubs finish first and second in Phase I (the round-robin stage) and remain tied in the Phase II semifinals, the top two from Phase I advance to the final phase. When teams finishing in positions 3 through 8 in Phase II are level on points, a defined tie-breaking sequence is used in the following order:

1. The goal difference across Phase II semifinals.

2. The total goals scored in Phase II semifinals.

3. The highest away-goal tally in Phase II semifinals.

4. The fewest goals conceded away from home in Phase II semifinals.

5. The fewest yellow cards in Phase II semifinals.

6. The fewest red cards in Phase II semifinals.

7. The best finish in Phase I standings among the tied clubs.
