Berbatov’s Take: United’s Next Moves, Kane, Osimhen and Parcels of Focus

The former Manchester United forward analyzes the latest news about his old club just hours before heading to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium.

When Dimitar Berbatov joined Manchester United in 2008, the team had just been crowned Premier League and European champions. He walked into a dressing room filled with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Carlos Tevez. After helping solidify United’s supremacy under Sir Alex Ferguson, securing two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and two runs to the Champions League final, the BulgarianVoice remains unimpressed with the side’s current form this season.

Erik ten Hag has collected the Carabao Cup, guided United to the FA Cup semi-finals and the Europa League quarter-finals, and now faces Sevilla with a second leg looming after a thrilling 2-2 draw at Old Trafford last week. The Red Devils appear on course to finish in the top four and reclaim a Champions League spot, but Berbatov says that isn’t enough.

‘Manchester United must fight for major objectives’

“Is it crazy? In my mind United should be pushing to win the Premier League like they used to,” Berbatov told GOAL.com on behalf of Enterprise Rent-A-Car. “Obviously the dynamics have shifted in football, but for United this shouldn’t be considered a great success – they have to battle for the important trophies again and again.”

Berbatov views United’s draw with Sevilla as a sign they still need improvement under Ten Hag. “When I talk to people and tell stories about my time at United, the word I always use is focus. It’s the message Sir Alex gave us just before we stepped on the pitch, focus until the end of the 90 minutes.” He notes that sometimes trouble arises when a team relaxes after going 2-0 up and believes the game is over. “It isn’t over yet. The match isn’t closed when you play someone like Sevilla.”

The need for a centre-forward

Berbatov, who scored 56 goals in 149 appearances for the Red Devils, sees a clear missing piece. “I think they need a striker. Someone who can score goals,” he asserts. “You bring in a striker and you expect that player to contribute around 25 goals. They need a true finisher. They must seek a weapon in attack.”

Kane as a solution, but age poses a risk

Berbatov backs Harry Kane as United’s best option, though he doubts the England captain will abandon Tottenham and worries about Kane’s age as he nears 30 in July. “You can’t argue with Kane’s record. He’s one of the best of his generation in finishing and game vision. He’s unbelievable,” he says. “Yet the only obstacle is age; he’s nearing 30 and has limited margin. That could be a major drawback for any potential deal. I think he’ll stay at Tottenham because his legacy there is enormous. He is the club’s all-time top scorer and England’s top marksman, a captain. The idea of him moving would tarnish that legacy. Any move to another club might not satisfy Tottenham’s fans.”

Osimhen, the standout choice

After ruling out Kane, Berbatov presents Victor Osimhen as United’s strongest option. The Nigerian star has netted 21 Serie A goals this season and has helped Napoli claim their first title since 1990, all while still just 24 years old. “It’s crucial to have a player who scores consistently and is at an age where he can grow and improve for many years,” Berbatov explains. “In my view, Osimhen is the ideal fit. He’s having an incredible season and doing remarkable things. That’s the type of player I’d like to see at Manchester United.”

Ronaldo’s return deserved greater respect

Berbatov stresses the importance of pairing a star striker with the right club culture. Ronaldo’s 2021 return to United, which has been met with mixed results, stands as an example. “I don’t think it was a mistake because in the first season he scored a lot,” he comments. “But the narrative became about a miscommunication and a lack of respect on both sides. When you’re dealing with a living legend, constant respect is essential.” He adds that Ronaldo should be kept engaged and informed about playing decisions, as his stature warrants ongoing acknowledgement. “If you don’t show it, issues can arise.”

Berbatov calls for “simplicity” in Antony’s game plan

The interview, conducted two days after United’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, highlights Antony’s form and value following a record-commitment transfer. Berbatov notes the need for players to adapt to a new league and system, and praises a moment of pure football when Antony sent a precise ground pass to Diogo Dalot. “This is how football should be played,” he remarks. “You don’t always need fancy tricks; sometimes the simplest actions make all the difference.” He believes Antony has the talent and confidence, and should continue to trust himself as he develops.

“Sancho can do more”

Berbatov also comments on Jadon Sancho, who is still seeking his best form since arriving from Borussia Dortmund. He wonders why the winger has not yet fully realized his potential. “Why hasn’t he found consistency? He’s a superb player—dribbling, speed, and an eye for goal. The missing piece is something he needs to sort out in training. I’d like him to remain, because I believe he can improve a lot. With Sancho on the left and Antony on the right, United have speed, flair, and a strong supporting cast.”

Improvement in the third season

Berbatov acknowledges that adapting to a new club takes time. Despite two solid seasons at United, his best form arrived in the 2010/11 season, highlighted by a hat-trick against Liverpool and five goals against Blackburn. He finished as the Premier League’s top scorer that year with 20 goals. “That’s a good example. Sancho is in his second season and the best often comes in the third, so let’s hope his third season tops them all,” Berbatov suggests. “There isn’t a single reason. Some players need more time; others flourish quickly. May Sancho’s third season be the best.”
