Former Russian national team contributor Andrey Arshavin weighed in on the news that Zenit players Malcolm and Claudinho have obtained Russian citizenship, expressing personal reservations about naturalization for athletes. The remarks were reported by Sport Express.
“What is my view on Malcolm and Claudinho gaining citizenship? I am cautious. Will it strengthen the national team? You know where I stand; I am not in favor of naturalized players”, said Arshavin, outlining a clear stance on the topic.
In the current Russian Premier League season, Malcolm has appeared in 16 matches, delivering 11 goals and 5 assists. Claudinho has found the back of the net 2 times and provided 4 assists across 11 appearances this season for Zenit.
Zenit players themselves have raised the possibility of securing citizenship in Russia, signaling a broader conversation about eligibility and the composition of the national squad.
Defender Mario Fernandez is highlighted as a key figure among naturalized players within the Russian national team, having represented the country in 33 matches. Fernandez’s presence has underscored the ongoing role naturalized players play in Russian football and the conversations that accompany change in the national setup.
Vladimir Bystrov, a former member of the Russian national team, also commented on the development regarding Malcolm and Claudinho’s citizenship status, adding his perspective to the ongoing discussion about eligibility and national representation.
