Swimmers from the Alicante region delivered an outstanding showing at the Spain Absolute Winter Championship, held in Sabadell in a 25-meter pool last weekend. The energy in the arena was high as athletes pushed their limits, turning competitive energy into clear results across several events.
Eldense’s Alba Herrero Lázaro, a member of the Elche Tennis Club swimming group, tallied two silver medals. Angela Martínez, competing for the KZM Swimming Team from Elche, earned one silver and one bronze, while Pedro Sánchez, representing CT Elche, added a bronze to the Alicante tally. The open nature of the competition allowed foreign swimmers and athletes from other Spanish clubs to participate, making the podium finishers’ performances even more noteworthy for the regional program.
Herrero achieved a remarkable milestone by finishing second in the 200-meter freestyle, and she set a new regional record with a time of 1:57.00 in the process. Her effort placed her behind Signe Wiegant of Mediterrani, who claimed the top spot in that race, but Herrero’s performance still marked a notable regional best among Valencian Community competitors.
In the 400-meter freestyle, the Elche-trained swimmer from Elda delivered a strong second-place time of 4:06.96, closing in behind Paula Juste of Lleida CN. Juste led the field with a time around that mark, while Herrero continued to push the pace alongside Elche teammates who also battled for high-scoring finishes. Angela Martínez finished third in 4:07.56, showcasing consistent momentum across mid-distance events.
The CT Elche squad also produced a solid result in the 100-meter freestyle, with a fourth-place finish marking a strong performance. Although not on the podium in that race, the athlete still secured a record-setting 55.20 seconds, a new Valencian Community best for the event.
Angela Martínez and Pedro Sánchez were highlighted as two of the Alicante swimmers who earned medals during the Sabadell national meet, underscoring the depth of talent in the region.
Herrero from Elche finished second in the 1,500 meters, clocking 16:05.64, and she secured a notable third place in the 400 freestyle with a 4:07.56 performance.
In another strong showing, Pedro Sánchez Castillo of CT Elche finished third in the demanding 200-meter backstroke on the final day, setting a Valencian Community record with a time of 1:53.74 and reinforcing the region’s rising status in backstroke disciplines.
The final balance for Alicante at the Sabadell championships included three silver medals earned by Alba Herrero and Angela Martínez, and two bronze medals achieved by Angela Martínez and Pedro Sánchez.
These results stand as evidence of the sustained growth and consistent progress shown by three young Alicante swimmers. Their performances at national events reflect ongoing development that has positioned them for greater involvement in international competitions in the years ahead, illustrating the strength and potential of the region’s swimming programs.
