Phil Esposito, a two-time Stanley Cup winner and top scorer of the 1972 Super Series between the USSR and Canada national teams, spoke about his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We generally have a good relationship, we get along well with Putin. I think he respects my playing tough and hopeless, and one day during the presentation of the teams in Moscow, he asked me if I was embarrassed when I fell. I said that at a moment like this one should cry or laugh. I chose the second option and agreed, ”Esposito quotes the words TASS.
He also noted that he made an agreement with Putin to participate in a documentary about the Super Series, but the shooting did not take place due to the pandemic.
Recall that Putin participated in Night Hockey League matches several times. Games in which the President participates are not held as part of official tournaments, but are exhibited. The last time he was on the ice was in May 2021. Then his team “Hockey Legends” won the NHL team with a score of 13:9. Putin scored eight goals.
