Cyber security experts from Hive Systems have performed tests that show how modern video cards influence the speed of passwords. The research focus was the GeForce RTX 5090 -the NVIDIA flagship, which turned out to be 33% more effective than the previous RTX 4090 model when processing hash (coded versions of passwords).
According to the data, one RTX 5090 can choose an 8-digital code in 3 hours, and this time a system of 12 such cards reduces to 15 minutes. However, with the growth of password complexity, the hacking time increases sharply. For example, a combination of eight small letters requires approximately 8 months from one video card and 12 cards – three weeks.
If the password includes figures, capital and lowercase letters, even a dozen RTX 5090 will deal with just 62 years. Adding special systems increases the term up to 164 years. This emphasizes how extra symbols complicate the task for attackers. It is important to note that such attacks are only possible if there is a stolen hash base. Without its hacking method of enforcement due to misconception.
The Hive Systems Study is an annual project that evaluates the risks of weak passwords. In 2024, tests with the RTX 4090 already showed the vulnerability of simple combinations, but the new GPU speeds up the process. For example, when working with RTX 5090 symbols, RTX 4090 is doubled, although a long password will still take a long time.
Experts remind us: the length and the variety of signs remain the key to protect data. Even a small complication of the password significantly increases the resistance to automated attacks.
