Ubisoft introduced the public release of Chroma – an instrument that helps developers take into account the characteristics of flowing colors in people with different forms of color blindness. The solution that was used earlier in the studio is now available for everyone on an open code.
Chroma allows in real time to apply filters to the game interface that imitate the color blindness as Protanopi, Deiteranopi and Tritanopi. This helps to create content that is available for more than 300 million people around the world, who have experienced similar characteristics of vision. The tool is integrated in the engines without a noticeable effect on performance, which simplifies testing, even in complex projects.
The development was started in 2021 in the Ubisoft Indian Unit, where the quality control team was looking for ways to accelerate to checking accessibility games. The main task was to make a solution that not only simulates color perception, but also enables developers to continue to work with the project in the test process. According to Ubisoft, the opening of the tool code will help the community to improve technology together. Developers can adjust Chroma to their projects or supplement them with functions – for example, add new filters or integration with other platforms.
Experts note that such initiatives gradually change the standards of the industry. Instead of point improvements, the studio starts to introduce a check on accessibility at the stage of making content. This is especially important for games where color is often used to send important information – for example, designation of allies, enemies or interactive objects. You can download Chroma and get to know the documentation on the Ubisoft Github page. The company also urged users to share ideas for the development of tools via the Open Feedback Forum.
