The US prepares new tasks for electronics after a month and a half

The American administration has announced the temporary release of smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices of increased import tasks. Earlier, the American customs service electronics excluded a list of goods charged by “mutual rates” in 125% for China and 10% for other countries. However, as Donald Trump said in social networks, this is not a cancellation, but “to another tariff basket”. We are talking about creating a separate category of tasks for semiconductors and related products, which will be lower than the current rates for China, but higher than the base 10%.

The Chinese Ministry of Trade called the temporary exemption “a small step towards correcting errors”, encouraging the United States to completely leave Unilateral measures. In the meantime, the American authorities started an investigation into the supply chains of electronics and semiconductors to assess their influence on national security. Experts note that the new rates for semiconductors, who can be announced in the coming weeks, can lead to an increase in electronic prices. However, the final tasks parameters, including their size and list of goods, are not yet announced. Thus, a temporary delay for electronics manufacturers can be replaced by new challenges and the global supply chains are waiting for the following changes.
