Passmark analysts, the leading platform for testing performance, released unprecedented data: for the first time in two decades of observations, the average CPU indicators for both laptops and desktopes negative dynamics showed.
According to the report, mobile processors lost 3.4% of capacity per year. If the average score of 101 thousand devices was 14,632 points in 2024, 25.5 thousand tested laptops were shown only 14 130 points at the beginning of the 2025th. The desktops turned out to be more stable – their result decreased by 0.5% (from 26,436 to 26,311 points), but even a slight fall violated many years of progress.
Experts notice the stagnation of top decisions. The record holder 2023 – the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX – is still not exceeded, and the mobile Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, which made an Intel Core Ultra 275HX new product with a modest increase of 6.8%. At the same time, the newest AMD Ryzen 9000 and Intel Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200s, unlike marketing promises, could not break the trend.
Passmark raises various hypotheses. Firstly, users switch to budget devices en masse with the emphasis on energy efficiency, not in strength. Secondly, in contrast to the predecessor, Windows 11 can “delay” the system due to optimization problems-especially in games where AMD and Intel driver programs are behind the OS updates.
Analysts emphasize: data is for the time being. Now 4 times fewer laptops are being tested and 3.8 times less PC than during the entire 2024 years. It is possible that with the release of new chips and increasing statistics, the curve rises again. However, if the trend is stored, this becomes a signal for the industry – the era of the “automatic” increase in performance is over and will require future progress innovative solutions.
