Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic said he will boycott an interview at the Australian Open until he receives an apology. The athlete announced this at a press conference.
Tony Jones, presenter of Channel 9, the official broadcaster of the tournament, said the following while commenting on the songs of Djokovic fans: “Novak is very overrated. That’s already in the past. Get him out of here.” The Serb considered this an insult and refused to give an interview.
On January 19, Djokovic defeated Czech Republic representative Jiri Legechka in the 1/8 final match with 6:3, 6:4, 7:6 (7:4). He will play against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.
On March 6, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced that it had decided to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to compete in neutral status at the Olympics in France. Russians Mirra Andreeva and Diana Schneider reached the final of the women’s doubles at the Olympic tournament and lost to the Italian couple Sara Errani/Yasmin Paolini. The remaining tennis players from Russia did not win a medal at the Games.
