36-year-old boxer Tyson Fury announced that he is ending his professional career.
“I would like to announce my retirement from boxing. It was great, I enjoyed every minute of it. But I will end it here,” the Briton wrote on his social networks.
The famous heavyweight, former world champion has two fights in 2024. He lost to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk in both. He won all of his other 35 fights in the professional ring. 34 wins with one draw with American Deontay Wilder in 2018 – then Fury beat him confidently in 2020 and 2021.
On May 18 of last year, Fury and Usik won a long-awaited fight for the title of absolute world champion according to WBC (Fury’s fourth defense), WBA-Super, IBF, WBO, IBO (Usik’s third defense). fought in the war. (Usik’s second defense).
The event took place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and attracted great attention. The fight lasted all 12 rounds and Fury was knocked down in the ninth round. However, the decision of the judges turned out to be divided: one judge gave the victory to the British (114-113), and two judges gave the victory to the Ukrainian athlete (114-113 and 115-112), who was declared the winner.
Fury exercised his right to revenge by exercising an option in the contract. The match, held in the same arena on December 21, lasted 12 rounds. This time, all the same titles were at stake except the IBF, which Usik was deprived of due to having to ignore his mandatory challenger due to revenge obligations, after which the organization vacated the title.
This time the fight between the Briton and the Ukrainian turned out to be much more one-sided, and according to the results, all three judges unconditionally gave the victory to Usik with the same score: 116-112.
“Tyson lost two fights in a row and lost his motivation to perform. He had a good boxing career, defeating strong fighters. But there is no point in getting into the ring when there is no motivation inside. Had he defeated Usik in the second fight, it would have been a trilogy. And this is already meaningless. “Now Fury is leaving, a holy place is never empty, so new heroes will emerge.” ODDS.ru Russian boxer Konstantin Tszyu.
Fury earned $76 million in his rematch against Usik, while his winning opponent’s fee was $114 million.
“Thank you, Greedy Belly”
Before Fury’s announcement, it appeared his next opponent was a foregone conclusion and the fight would also be a huge box office draw. Another British star boxer Anthony Joshua could fight him.
“I’ve been in a lot of fights but the Fury fight has to happen in 2025. I’m targeting that. This is the fight I want to see because I love boxing too. I want this fight to happen. I don’t have many years ahead of me; most of my career is already behind me. To do this and be positive “Leave a mark,” Joshua said after his compatriot’s loss to Usyk.
“They are not downed pilots. Fury had two very close fights with Usyk. Joshua put on a great performance despite having a bad fight. [Даниэлем] Dubois, but both men are still at the peak of their powers and this is a huge fight. “I believe we will see him in the summer,” promoter Eddie Hearn said recently.
The expert also expressed doubts that one of the Brits, who has lost twice to Usik, could beat him in the future.
“Usyk will be the big favorite in both trilogies. Usyk’s performance in the final rounds against AJ <...> I thought he was finished, but he increased his intensity and threw a lot of punches. I’m not sure anyone can beat Usyk,” Hearn emphasized.
Usik, who recently received the Boxer of the Year award from The Ring magazine, addressed Fury’s own words, the “Gypsy King” at the award ceremony.
“I want to give a shout out to my rival and great friend, Tyson Fury. “Greedy belly, thank you very much, you were a great opponent,” said the Ukrainian player.
The Great Road of the “Gypsy King”
Starting his career in amateur boxing, Fury competed for Irish and British clubs and represented both countries in various international tournaments. He had 35 amateur fights and won 31, but lost out on qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as part of the UK team to David Price, who eventually reached the semi-finals and won the bronze medal.
Fury began his professional career in December 2008, defeating Hungarian Béla Gyöngiessy by technical knockout in the sixth round.
The first truly serious rival of the future “Gypsy King” was his compatriot Dereck Chisora in 2011. Both men came close to the fight with a 14-win streak in the professional ring, but Fury won by unanimous decision and took the British title from his opponent.
Fury, who slowly rose in the heavyweight hierarchy and won interim championships, started fighting with Ukrainian Vladimir Klitschko, who has long held the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO and The Ring belts, in 2015. The Englishman, who defeated his opponent at his home in Düsseldorf, Germany, with the unanimous decision of the referees, despite losing points in the 11th round, took all these championships for himself. His record at the time was 25 wins in 25 fights.
In December 2015, Fury refused to defend his IBF title against Ukrainian mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov in favor of a rematch with Klitschko, flushing the belt down the toilet when he learned that the organization had stripped him of his belt for this reason.
Later, an accusation emerged that he used the steroid nandrolone, and for this reason, a lawsuit was filed against the “Gypsy King” by the British Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD). As a result, the boxer’s doubts and temporary suspension were eliminated, but Klitschko Jr. The rematch with was nevertheless postponed indefinitely “for medical reasons” and ultimately never took place.
Traces of cocaine were found in Fury’s sample in September 2016, he was stripped of his boxing license and went into treatment for drug addiction, before returning to the ring in 2018.
After defeating two formidable opponents, he got into a fight with WBC world champion Wilder. Although Fury was knocked down twice, the fight ended in a draw; The first and only fight in the Briton’s career.
Fury, who won two more victories, faced his opponent again, and this time Wilder was knocked down twice, and the victory with a technical knockout in the seventh round went to the “Gypsy King” along with the WBC and The Ring championships.
A year and a half later, in his next fight, Tyson defeated Wilder again, this time knocking him out in the eleventh round and confirming his championships. He then beat Dillian Whyte, Dereck Chisora (for the third time) and Cameroonian Francis Ngannou, who switched from mixed martial arts to boxing and became a legend.
In the fight with Ngannou, Fury was knocked down in the third round and won by split decision of the judges after thirteen minutes (two against one, giving the victory to the Briton). It was the last one for “Gypsy King” because afterwards there was a duo with Usik.
