Russian Basketball Federation (RFB) President Andrei Kirilenko evaluated the performance of the national team in the Friendship Cup preparation tournament. His words guide the way “Soviet sport”.
“The first game was a C grade for me and that was only because we went to extra time heroically and won the game. And in Libya there is not even anything to evaluate. I can’t give this match a five because the difference was too big. So in two-game sports, it’s just C,” Kirilenko said.
The tournament took place in Moscow from 22 to 24 November. The Russian team took first place by beating Tunisia (81:73 overtime) and Libya (108:60).
At the end of February 2022, the IOC issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions. The organization decided to admit Russians and Belarusians to the 2024 Olympic Games as neutral athletes at the end of 2023. To participate, they had to meet a series of requirements and qualify. Medals of Russians and Belarusians are not taken into account in the medal rankings.
