The International Chess Federation (FIDE) recognized Magnus Carlsen from Norway and Judit Polgar from Hungary as the best grandmasters of the century. This was reported on the organization’s official page on the X social network.
Carlsen and Polgar were presented with their awards at a gala evening dedicated to the centenary of FIDE in Budapest the previous day.
The 33-year-old Norwegian chess player is the leader in the International Chess Federation rating, having won the title of world champion in classical chess in 2013 and defended it four times. Polgar retired in August 2014, having led the FIDE women’s rankings from 1989 to 2015. A member of the Hungarian women’s team, she won gold medals at the 1988 and 1990 World Chess Olympiads. She also won silver twice in the competition as part of the men’s national team.
