Jamaican athlete and two-time Olympic champion George Rhoden has died at the age of 97. It was reported official website International Association of Athletics Federations (World Athletics).
The exact cause of his death is unknown.
Rodin specialized in sprinting and relay events. He is a champion and medalist of the Central American and Caribbean Games, a participant in two Olympiads, a two-time Olympic champion, and an Olympic and world record holder.
Rodin competed in the 400-metre race and the 4×400-metre relay at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. The Jamaican team failed to qualify for the finals in the first discipline and was left out of the medal list in the second. Four years later, he won both gold medals at the Games in Helsinki. He came first in the 400-metre race with an Olympic record time of 45.9 seconds. He also won the gold medal with the Jamaican team in the 4×400-metre relay. In the first race of the competition, the Jamaican team set an Olympic record (3.12.13 seconds) and won the final race in a world record (3.03.9 seconds).
