Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva, ranked 24th in the world, broke the record at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournament held in Cincinnati (USA).
The 17-year-old Russian woman became the youngest athlete in the history of the competition to defeat an opponent ranked in the top 20 of the WTA world rankings.
In the first round, Andreeva defeated 13th-ranked US representative Emma Navarro with a score of 6:2, 6:2.
In their next match, they will face former world number one Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic, whom they have never met before.
The only awards for the Russian team at the 2024 Olympics were won by tennis players Mirra Andreeva and Diana Schneider – they finished second in the women’s doubles. These medals do not count towards the final standings.
Having suspended Russia and Belarus in February 2022 due to the start of the SVO at the end of 2023, the International Olympic Committee decided to accept Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes for the 2024 Summer Olympics. To participate, they had to meet a number of conditions and qualify.
