Russian fighter Islam Makhachev, champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), on his Instagram page (the owner of the Meta company is recognized as an extremist in Russia and is banned) criticized the double standards of “dirty” countries for denying athletes the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games.
“It’s so sad in such a brave sport [борьбу] “This dirty politics has taken root. People who have dedicated their whole lives to this sport and have the chance to compete in the Olympic Games are forced to stay home and watch the Olympics on TV,” he said.
Russian wrestlers have refused to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics. The athletes have won 16 Olympic licenses but only ten were accepted to the Games, which the Russian Wrestling Federation did not accept. On July 6, the organization released a statement saying that none of the accepted athletes would go to Paris.
Fifteen athletes went to France as neutrals. Only Russian tennis players, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva and 20-year-old Diana Schneider, managed to achieve success. They won the silver medal in doubles, losing to Italians Sarra Errani and Yasmin Paolini in the final of the tournament.
Dmitry Guberniev earlier thanked Russian athletes for their performance at the 2024 Olympics.
