The Russian Football Union (RFU) has signed a new contract with the head coach of the national team, Valery Karpin. This was reported by press service RFU.
The new contract has been signed until July 2028.
The specialist took over the leadership of the Russian national team, replacing Stanislav Cherchesov, after finishing last in the group at the European Championship in July 2021. The Russian team won 11 of the 17 matches played under the leadership of Valery Karpin, had 5 draws and 1 defeat.
In the spring of 2022, the International Federation of Football (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), following the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), decided to suspend all Russian clubs, as well as the Russian national team, from participation in all competitions controlled by these organizations. The Russians missed the 2022 World Cup play-offs and the 2022/23 Nations League tournament, and also missed the current European Championship.
