12th world chess champion Anatoly Karpov has outraged the decision of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to disqualify grandmaster Sergey Karyakin for his views on what’s going on in Ukraine.
“I have no words to comment on this crazy decision. If FIDE continues like this, it will simply disintegrate. The federation leadership denies it: they say it’s the ethics commission, not us. Politics and doping mixed together, everything became pure dirt: raise the flag, put down the anthem. Chess is unfortunately a game.” is no exception. And politics got there,” Karpov quotes “Arguments and Facts”.
On March 21, Sergei Karyakin was suspended for six months by the decision of the FIDE ethics and discipline commission, due to an open letter addressed to Vladimir Putin. Later, the chess player announced that he would establish a new organization as an alternative to FIDE.
Let’s remember that FIDE also decided to deprive Russian and Belarusian chess players of the right to play in tournaments under their country’s flag and anthem. Chess players will be able to participate in competitions under the FSHR/BSHF or FIDE flags.
Formerly Anatoly Karpov talked about the upcoming match for the title of championIt will feature Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi.
