Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova will not compete in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The athlete, who competed in the Bahamas championship, failed to meet the standard by covering the distance in 2 minutes and 29 seconds.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions. At the end of 2023, the organization decided to accept Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes. To participate, they must meet a number of requirements and be qualified.
As an alternative, Russia created the Friendship Games format. The first Friendship Games were planned to be held in Moscow and Yekaterinburg from 15 to 29 September 2024. The initiator and coordinator of the Friendship Games is the International Friendship Association (IFA). On June 7, Alexey Sorokin, general director of the Friendship Games organizing committee, confirmed the information that the event would be postponed.
