FIDE has decided to deprive Russian and Belarusian chess players of the right to compete in tournaments under the flag and anthem of their respective countries in 2022. Chess players will be able to participate in competitions under the FSR/Belarusian Chess Federation (BSF) or FIDE flags.

The FIDE Council had previously allowed the FCR to move from the European Chess Union to the Asian Chess Federation.

At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.
