Russian grandmaster Nepomniachtchi defeated French Firouzja in the Candidates’ Tournament.

Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated the French Alireza Firouzja with black pieces in the 11th round of the Candidates’ Tournament.

After 11 rounds, the 31-year-old Russian is in the lead with eight points. The second row is shared by Chinese Ding Liren, as well as chess players from the US Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana. Each has five and a half points.

The 12th week of the tournament will be played tomorrow, 1 July. Nepomniachtchi will play white pieces against Nakamura.

The 2022 Candidates Chess Tournament will be held from June 16 to July 5 in Madrid, Spain. Eight grandmasters will compete for the right to play world champion Norway’s Magnus Carlsen.

Nepomniachtchi, 2021 Vice-President World Champion, 2010 European Champion, two-time Russian Champion, two-time World Tag Team Champion with the Russian team, winner of the Candidates Chess Tournament 2020/2021.
