Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke harshly about the possibility that one of the Russian athletes could sign a document condemning the SVO for the sake of participating in the Olympic Games. His words are quoted by the publication aif.ru.

“Of course, no one here could have imagined that a Russian athlete, in order to participate in the Olympics, would sign some kind of document condemning the SVO, for selling his homeland in exchange for these pieces of silver. Anyone who did this would simply become a demon. However, it seems that there is no such obligation anymore and everyone who ranks will be able to go to the Olympics,” Peskov said.

At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.

To qualify for the Games, Russian athletes will have to sign updated conditions of participation that include a commitment to respect the Olympic Charter, including the “peaceful mission of the Olympic movement”, the IOC said. Athletes from Russia and Belarus will not compete in the medal count.

March 14, Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) president Stanislav Pozdnyakov statedAthletes participating in the Olympics will be required to denounce SVO and sign “certain other documents” that contravene Russian legislation. However, the criterion for condemning SVO was not included.

The Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
