International Football Federation (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino appealed to the Turkish authorities after the fight between fans and football players following the Turkish Championship match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce. His statement was published on Instagram Stories (its owner, Meta, is known as an extremist and has been banned in Russia).
“I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels and to hold those responsible for the shocking events in Trabzon accountable for their actions,” he said.
The match was played in Trabzon and the home team lost with a score of 2:3. After the final whistle, the crowd of fans flocked to the field, attacked the opposing team’s players, threw bottles at them and a fight broke out. The players took shelter in the locker room until the referees calmed the situation.
Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced that it intends to investigate the incident. It was noted that the perpetrators would be punished.
It is worth noting that this is not the first incident in Turkey. TFF temporarily suspended the championships as a result of Ankaragücü club president Faruk Koca attacking referee Halil Umut Meler in the 15th round match played between Ankaragücü and Rizespor on December 12, 2023. The referee was thrown onto the grass and taken to hospital. Then the attacker prisoner to punishment.
