Olympic champion in speed skating and State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova said in an interview with socialbites.ca that it was necessary for Russian figure skaters to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the team tournament of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. .
According to him, the claim of Canada, which won the bronze medal of the Russian team, cannot be ignored.
“This had to be done because Canada filed a lawsuit to take away our third place. So not only did we appeal, we were obliged to. We continue to be in the first place: CAS, as the body where jurisprudence is applied, concludes cases positively in favor of those who file such cases. If this is not the case in Russia, then the CAS, with all due respect, is a politicized institution,” Zhurova said.
In January 2024, CAS disqualified Kamila Valieva, who was on the national team at the tournament, for an anti-doping rule violation. The skater was suspended for four years, effective from December 2021, and was stripped of all awards won during that period.
After the disqualification, the International Skating Union (ISU) awarded the Russians third place in the team tournament of the 2022 Olympic Games, without depriving Russia as a whole of the medal. Gold went to the US team and silver went to the Japanese team.
Formerly the Supreme Court of Switzerland registered Appeal in the Valieva case.
