Honorary President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Vyacheslav Koloskov supported the innovation in which the referees of the Russian Premier League (RPL) and the Russian Cup will announce their decisions in the stadium after watching the episode using the video assistant referee (VAR) system. His words are quoted legal betting.
“Everything that is unusual is initially perceived with great fear. How loud will the referees’ announcements be heard throughout the stadium? In hockey you can hear it all. It is difficult to say whether the referee’s verbal decision will reach the audience. If there is such a purpose, then there is a meaning in it. I can describe it in one word: extraordinary.
We probably want to be pioneers. If other federations have experiences, they have probably been analysed. So how much will this benefit football? However, it would be wrong to reject this outright. I would support the initiative, but I don’t know how useful it is,” Koloskov said.
On February 26, the Russian Football Union (RFU) announced that it would participate in an experiment conducted by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and the International Football Federation (FIFA).
In national championship and cup matches, referees will begin to announce the decisions they made following the intervention of VAR. The judges will be heard both in the stadium and on television in the spring part of the 2023/24 season.
Matches of the Russian championship will continue in early March. After 18 rounds in the RPL, Krasnodar entered the winter break as the leader with 38 points. Zenit is in second place with two points missing. Dinamo (32 points) completed the top three.
